Art is a way to tell stories, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do

Amabel Banda, a visual artist has just wrapped up her solo art exhibition at Kaliso Art Gallery, which took place from February 7th to 14th. The exhibition focused on modern society and the challenges people face today. Through her artwork, Banda explored important themes such as women empowerment, body autonomy, and mental health awareness.

“Art is a way to tell stories, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” she said. She carefully selected the color palette and styles in her work to reflect the evolution of African and Malawian art.

The exhibition showcased several unique pieces, each carrying a deep message. Black Smoke, an abstract painting, symbolizes the darkness and struggles affecting the country. It captures the difficult times and the somber mood within society. Another standout piece, Big Pink Lady, is a recurring theme in Banda’s work, representing female empowerment. Though it began as a different concept, it ultimately took the form it was meant to, reinforcing its powerful message.

Banda expressed satisfaction with the exhibition, saying it was well attended by a diverse group of people. She appreciated the support from visitors and buyers and emphasized that this is the kind of work she has always wanted to create.

Looking ahead, Banda plans to continue experimenting artistically and promoting art in Malawi.

She extended her gratitude to Eve Chisambiro, the owner of Kaliso Art Gallery, for providing the platform, and to everyone who attended, purchased artwork, or sent well wishes.
