"A nation that does not write is not right,"
The Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) celebrated a major achievement with the launch of its Short Story Competition on March 15, 2025, at the Golden Peacock in Lilongwe. Writers, literary enthusiasts, and media representatives gathered to honor storytelling and Malawi’s growing literary culture. Â
The competition, themed "AI and Mental Health," seeks to empower writers while sparking discussions on the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence. MAWU emphasized that stories can make AI relatable, ensuring even rural communities understand its impact. Â
MAWU President Shadreck Chikoti, a renowned writer, opened the event with a powerful speech. He stated, "A nation that does not write is not right," underscoring storytelling’s role in preserving culture and driving national progress. Â
MAWU Board Chairman Lawrence Kadzitche delivered the keynote address, highlighting the competition’s role in nurturing local talent. Public Relations Officer Chifuniro Banda outlined the guidelines, ensuring accessibility for all participants. Â

A standout moment came when Vice Chairperson Pamela Mlongeni donated MK1,000,000 to the prize fund, showcasing her dedication to Malawian literature.

Open to secondary students and the public, the competition offers cash prizes and publication in an anthology. This initiative promises to elevate Malawian voices globally, fostering literary talent and sparking vital conversations on AI and mental health.
